The Agathodaimon is a household or personal spirit that protected the domestic life and the home. "Agathodaimon" translates to 'noble spirit' and serves as a title.
In art they were represented as a snake or young man (despite originally being androgynous figures). They were frequently depicted holding a cornucopia, bowl, poppy, and ear of grain. They could also take the form of a serpent.
The Agathodaimon was associated with Tyche, as they both provided fair fortune. They were also heavily associated with Zeus, Dionysus, and Hermes.
Interaction and worship of the agathodaimon was a domestic, not state, affair. A libation of wine was poured for the agathodaimon at the start of every banquet or formal gathering that occurred in the household. A libation was also poured when a serpent was spotted on the property, as a serpent was interpreted as the agathodaimon's presence.
The second day of the month is sacred to them.
In modern terms, they are comparable to the Christian concept of the guardian angel, or the Roman Genii.
My agathodaimon is very stoic and quiet. He likes things to be neat and orderly, and has refused to talk with me until I've picked up my space before. I frequently contact spirits and other entities during readings for others, and my agathodaimon helps me to make sure that nothing sticks around that I don't want to. In my experience, the agathodaimon is first and foremost a guardian spirit.
I keep a small shrine to my agathodaimon near my Hellenic household shrine for Apollo, Hekate, and Hermes. I usually offer him bread, water, and meat. Any hearty, healthy food works as an offering for him. His shrine has a small depiction of a red snake that I made for him, a bell I use for cleansing that is dedicated to him, and some clear quartz and red jasper that he took a liking to.
